West Highland Way Race

17 miles (ish)

I am so tired at this point in time, I am struggling to write this but if I do not do it now I won’t get it done so I think this will be a pretty rubbish post.

Unlike most people I know who were running today I had to work on Friday and was there for 10 hours so not a great start to a weekend of little sleep.  I then came home, prepared food and went back to East Kilbride for our staff night out.  I was only going to say hello and was not eating but I was glad I made the effort to go as I was given a card and present since I am leaving the school.  So it was then a strange, emotional start to the weekend for me too.  Came home and cooked some more before leaving for Milngavie.

Enjoyed seeing everyone at Milngavie although the actual start seemed like a strange anti-climax and it was so strange seeing so few runners set off.

Went off to the Beech Tree Inn and that was one of my favourite stops.  It was really amazing seeing these head torches come into view from way down the path, especially once the first couple of runners went by and it became one long line of torches as so many people were still together at this point.  I had sports drink and jelly babies for pacepusher but was really worried I would miss him as it was so hard to see who was who and I could only go by the colour of the tops.  My dad had gone further down the path so he could shout out to pacepusher where I was.

Drymen next and again here it felt like we did not have to wait that long for him.  Again I had sports drink and this time a jam roll and some thing else for him.  He was of course too fast and my dad and I were a bit worried about that.  It was good to catch up with Sharon, Deb’s back-up at this point.

Onto Balmaha and I managed to shut my eyes here but I did not find it easy to sleep here and it felt like I only dozed off when my alarm on my phone went off and pacepusher was coming in.  He complained here that he was feeling really tired but he looked a lot fresher than I felt!  Did not say this though!  He was about 20 mins ahead of schedule here but seemed to be doing alright.  I felt really groggy and horrible here and it felt like it was going to be a really long day!

Onto Rowardennan and managed to shut my eyes again but took ages to doze off and again the alarm went off all too soon.  Heard that Marco had gone through the checkpoint first here and caught up with Sharon again and Silke too.

Had a longer break next as we would not meet up until Beinglass farm.  Parked at the Drovers Inn and spoke to my aunt, eventually as mobile phone reception, who had seen him at Inversnaid.  He was still going about 20 mins faster than the schedule and I built that into the time I allowed to shut my eyes.  Allowed what I thought would be plenty of time to walk across but he was just going by as we walked in and shouted that he would get us at Derrydarroch farm.  I must point out that he was now 35 mins ahead of the schedule which I had not expected in distance from Inversnaid.  Of course I knew I would not hear the end of this but told myself I would put up with it while the race was on.  Went to Derrydarroch farm and walked up the hill with some food to meet him.  Of course it was my fault that he had run on empty to here and had had a really bad section!  Met Katrina here and she said she had seen pacepusher at Beinglass and tried to phone me to let me know – I got the message about 6 hours later!

He complained of blisters but decided to wait to put stuff on them until the A82 crossing so he could get new socks.  Went there and tried to put on granuflex(?) which he had been supposed to put on before he started but had forgotten about as he was too busy watching the football.  I did not managed to do it very well though and we gave up, he just put vaseline on his feet and a new pair of socks.  John caught up at this point and was surprised and pleased to catch up with pacepusher!

We then went on to Auchtertyre Farm and had a bit of a longer wait there.  Met WHW runner and Allybea here, I thought I was seeing things when I saw WHW runner no longer running but it sounds like he made the right decision to stop.  Pacepusher came in fine here (I think, it is all starting to blur) and got weighed, where he had stayed the same.

I published my report having finished it but the web connection lost and I only have the post until here.  I was already enough of an emotional wreck today without having that happen and am too tired to rewrite it so am just going to finish my report about the actual race very quickly.

Various people ran with him pretty much from Tyndrum until the end.  I got really tired at Tyndrum and did not know how I was going to last the day but in the end was fine, running from Kingshouses to the Devil’s Staircase and from Kinlochleven to the end.

I had been really worried in the week before the race that I would let pacepusher down as I am so busy with getting ready to go away to Malawi for the summer and with packing up my class at school since I am moving on that I have not had much time to think about the race.  I found the day quite stressful as I was constantly thinking would I have the right things ready etc and although I enjoyed watching the race it was hard going being support.

I do not think at this point in time that I would be back-up crew again as after all that worry and trying so hard all day I got no thanks for it at all and obviously did not do a good enough job, as I was worried about.  All bar two comments have been to criticise me for not being at Beinglas farm and the  two comments apart from them were about when I was running with him and nothing about what I did the rest of the day.  I don’t think it’s worth it for that!

Well done to everyone who finished, I really enjoyed seeing everyone I knew coming through the various checkpoints.  Hope you all recover quickly!

7.20m/m pace

June 18, 2008

Sustrans race, Bridge of Weir, 7.40pm, 5.02 miles, 36.50, 7.20m/m pace

7.27m/m, 7.28m/m, 7.19m/m, 7.13m/m, 7.11m/m,

I really had to force myself out of the door for this and only 15 mins after I got in the house!  This was mostly because I have only done one handicap race a the club before, that was a year and a half ago and I came second last!  I was given a rubbish handicap being new to the club which was fair enough but put me off for quite a while!

I was not really thinking about the race element of the race at all, I just wanted to have the chance to see what I could do over 5 miles so that I would have more of an idea what my potential 10km time might be.  I was hoping I could run at about 7.15m/m pace and although it was 7.20m/m ave pace I managed I am more than pleased with that as I was working really hard the whole time and it far faster than anything I have done before.  If I could keep up that pace for a 10km it would give me a finishing time of 45.24 so now I have a goal!

Unfortunately I will not now get the chance to try a 10km until August when I get back from Malawi.  I am now hoping more than ever that I will get the chance to run enough while in Malawi although I really have no idea what will happen.

In terms of the race tonight I started 8th and finished 3rd so I was really happy with that and know I worked as hard as I could.  Thanks to Sandra and Lucy for the shouts of encouragement near the end!

I really did not want to go tonight and then as is happening more frequently now I really enjoyed myself, these times are even better than last week and I felt stronger as well.  What a difference when you are not doing a long run on a Sunday!

I think a lot of people are wondering what on earth I was playing at all through the winter being so slow on Monday nights but it was mostly because of my long runs plus the fact I have a different attitude to my running now that I am getting faster!

Steady six

June 15, 2008

11.44am, 6 miles, 50.34, Ave pace 8.25m/m

8.55, 8.22, 8.16, 8.19, 8.08, 8.29

Had to force myself out for this one after watching the men’s 10km race and really did not want to go but really enjoyed myself once I was out.  From the splits it looks a bit like a tempo run so quite happy with that.  Felt my legs tired from Thursday night in the last mile and my knees were getting a bit sore as I was not wearing my knee pads which was what prompted me not to go and make it seven or eight miles.

On Thursday night at the Rouken Glen 10km I came 181st out of 504 runners and also 29th out of 211 female runners so I am pretty chuffed with that, particularly with the 29th part!

12 seconds faster

June 12, 2008

Rouken Glen 10km, 47.38, Ave pace 7.40m/m

Km splits and mile pace for the km -

4.38 (7.28m/m), 4.45 (7.40), 4.21 (7.01), 5.09 (8.18), 5.41 (9.09),

5.02 (8.08), 4.46 (7.41), 4.35 (7.23), 4.20 (6.59), 4.17 (6.59)

I only registered for this race last night after having that good speed session at the club on Monday and was hoping for another pb but knew it was a very hilly course and by 5pm I was feeling really rubbish anyway and thought there was no chance.

I started off pretty fast for me but did dramatically slow down on the hills as can be seen from my splits so at that point I did not think I would get a pb.  I managed to really speed up once we started going downhill and was doing all of my maths in my head again to work out if I could do it but did not realise I could until 2km to go and I had to work really hard for it!  It might only be 12 seconds but I am very chuffed with it and can’t wait to see what I can do a slightly less challenging course.  I won’t be able to check that out now until I come back from Malawi but I am planning on doing speed work out there with the kids at the school.  I will take my gps and measure out a 400m track and do work on that I hope!  Who knows what will happen really!

Good speed session

June 9, 2008

7.12pm, 6 miles, 56.38mins

1.38 mile warm up – 8.38m/m and 3.59 mins

3 mins –  7.17m/m – 0.37 miles

3 mins – 7.09m/m – 0.42 miles

2 mins – 6.25m/m – 0.31 miles

2 mins – 6.35m/m – 0.30 miles

2 mins – 7.20m/m – 0.28 miles

1 min - 7.13m/m – 0.14 miles

1min – 6.39m/m – 0.15 miles

1 min – 6.49m/m – 0.15

1 min – 6.09m/m – 0.17 miles

1 min – 6.34m/m – 0.15 miles

1 min – 6.02m/m – 0.16 miles

1.26 mile recovery – 10.26m/m pace and 2.14 mins

I really enjoyed that tonight, it is probably the hardest I have ever worked on a speed session, and it was the first time for a while with tapering and recovering from London and Edinburgh.  I felt like I might be sick at the end but it was worth it as that must be the fastest splits I have ever done.  Just disappointed I did not dip under the 6.00m/m for that last one minute effort – next time!

Tagging

June 8, 2008

I have taken far too long to getting round to posting my replies from Allybea tagging me – sorry!  Trying to finish the term off and get ready to go to Malawi on the last day of term is taking it’s toll!

  • The rules of the game are posted at the start of your blog post.
  • In this case, I’m asking you 5 questions about running.
  • Each player answers the 5 questions on their own blog.
  • At the end of your post you tag 5 other people and post their names.
  • Go to their blogs and leave a comment on their blogs telling them they’ve been tagged and to look at your blog for details.
  • When they’ve answered the questions on their own blog, they come back to yours to tell you.

Finally got round to answering this but have no-one else left to tag when I finish!

1. How would you describe your running 10 years ago?A lot less structured than it is now, mainly for fitness, weight loss and training for the women’s 10km’s back in the day when they were in the west end!

2. What is your best and worst run/race experience?

My best experience would have to be this year’s Edinburgh marathon as it was such a big pb and much more under the 4 hours than I thought I could get.

Like Allybea my worst may well have been the New York marathon - the misery of feeling rubbish and not getting the time that I was sure I could get after some really good training was soul destroying.  I made up for it with the amount of shopping I did though and it only means I will have to go back and do it properly again some time!
3. Why do you run?

To increase my fitness and to lost weight but more so now to have goals for myself that I need to try and beat.  I like having something to improve on, I also love my classes at the gym but there is not such a good way to know progress with that.  A bit of comptition with other people does not hurt either now that I feel I am improving a bit.  I also love being outside now and am enjoying running in different places etc.  Of course combining running with trips to places like Berlin, New York, London and Chicago is good too!

4. What is the best or worst piece of advice you’ve been given about running?

Being encouraged to relax and have a positive mind set by lots of people was helpful, but only recently as I have only just started to feel I can see improvement.

I would not really say I have been given any bad advice.
5. Tell us something surprising about yourself that not many people would know.

As a few other people have also said I have a tatoo and a pierced naval!

I used to be really shy.

I lived in Canada for a couple of years.

I love reading.

Late run for me

June 8, 2008

7.42pm Milngavie to Drymen

12.61 miles, 2.14.09, Ave pace 10.38m/m

10.15, 9.35, 9.48, 9.44, 10.09, 10.04, 9.31, 9.45, 10.11, 10.59, 12.32, 13.46, 7.43

I enjoyed my run up until 9 miles and then my legs just died on me – what else did I expect only 9 days after such a big pb in the marathon!

It was also too late for me really to not be finishing running until almost 10pm and then not home until 10.5pm, and on a school night!

I have been really lazy and not run since, too busy on Thursday and enjoying myself too much in Aberdeen over the weekend to be bothered, which is bad I know and I ate too much but I will make up for it this week!

Good one for Mrs Crazyboy

June 2, 2008

3.1 miles

I took Mrs Crazyboy out again today and did the 5km distance again.  She did really well and took 3 mins off the time she did the 5km in with me two years ago and 7 mins off her time from last week so hopefully she will be even faster in the race on Sunday.  It is really nice to see someone else getting on well with your help.

Slow one

June 1, 2008

3 miles approx

Could not get myself up so early this morning even though I was awake from early on and I just did a little 3 miler on Sunday morning, managing not to get lost this time.  I think my legs were really feeling the effects of yesterday and I not sure it did me any good to go out at all but I had said to the others I was going to so that made me do it.  I really missed my garmin both days though, I hate not having my splits!

Just worked out that I have done the most miles of the year so far this month, that seems odd with tapering for Edinburgh although I suppose I have not taken much recovery time.  Pleased with that though and now have a goal to beat for June!
